Importance of Vitamin D for the Teeth
Calcium is often associated with strong teeth and bones, but calcium alone may not be enough to protect your teeth from all damage. Vitamin D, a vitamin your body makes naturally when your skin is exposed to sunlight, helps your body absorb calcium and remineralize teeth. Unfortunately, many of us may not be getting as much of this important vitamin as we need.
A recent study of nearly 3,000 children from six countries determined that kids with higher levels of vitamin D have a 50 percent lower risk of tooth decay. While the researchers focused on children, they believe that the results may apply to adults as well. When you have enough vitamin D in your body, your teeth are able to calcify properly, and your body’s immune system is better able to function.
It may not be possible for you to spend time outside every day without using sunblock, but there are plenty of other sources of vitamin D that can help you meet your daily needs. Fortified milks and juices can be great options. Vitamin D is also found in fish, eggs, and mushrooms. Supplements may be needed for those who are at a higher risk of a deficiency. Avoid sodas and soft drinks, which tend to be high in phosphates, which suppress vitamin D levels in the body.
