Importance of Dairy Products for the Teeth
Dairy products play an important role in your diet and overall health. They help keep your waistline trim, your bones strong, and surprisingly are extremely important in your smile health. According to a recent study, published in the Academy of General Dentistry’s peer-reviewed journal, dairy products like cheese can help reduce the risk of tooth decay.
The study evaluated nearly 70 participants between the ages of 12 and 15 years old. Oral pH levels were examined before the participants had their prepared snack. The group was then given milk and sugar-free yogurt or cheese, in which the oral pH was then examined again. Oral pH can be an important indicator of tooth decay risk. When the pH level is below 5.5, then your risk of erosion increases. As the enamel on your teeth erodes, you are more likely to suffer from tooth decay and cavities.
Researchers found that study participants who ate the cheese had dramatically higher pH levels than those who consumed the milk or yogurt, indicating that cheese may have a protective effect. This could be due to the increased saliva flow maintaining a proper pH balance or a substance in cheese attaching to the teeth to form a protective film.
Dairy products can help your smile in other ways, too. They contain enamel-building calcium, and, when calcium is fortified with vitamin D, it can help your teeth stay stronger.
