Digestive Problems Diagnosed by Dentists
Dental exams are usually considered the best way to keep track of your dental health, but routine checkups can also spot early signs of other health problems, too. In fact, as many as 90 percent of health problems, including many digestive problems, have oral symptoms.
1. Diabetes
Diabetes is a metabolic disease that is marked by an inability to regulate blood glucose levels. High blood glucose can lead to dry mouth, thrush and gum disease. Your breath may have a recognizable sweet or fruity smell, and you may struggle with repeated oral infections that are resistant to treatment. You may also be more prone to cavities.
2. Irritable bowel syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome is best known for causing chronic diarrhea or constipation. Those with IBS are more likely to suffer from temporomandibular joint disorders, or TMJ, potentially as a result of heightened pain sensitivity.
3. Inflammatory bowel disease
Crohn’s disease causes inflammation and intestinal damage, but it can also cause ulcers and inflammation in the oral cavity.
4. GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease causes stomach acids to wash back into the mouth. This causes pain and discomfort, but can also erode the teeth from the constant acid exposure. Frequent vomiting, such as severe morning sickness or eating disorders, may also lead to erosion of the teeth.
